Morton National Park

Be enthralled by nature on a grand scale at Morton National Park. If the cascading Fitzroy Falls do not leave you breathless, try the sweeping views from the top of Pigeon House Mountain Didthul. This enormous park really does have something for everyone; whether you are an experienced bushwalker looking for remote wilderness hiking, a novice mountain biker looking for an easy ride or a keen photographer looking for some scenic waterfalls to capture.

You will find imposing gorges dissecting the landscape alongside pockets of rainforest that are full of wildlife. There are a number of well-equipped picnic areas and numerous informal spots where you can stop for a break to enjoy the view and if you’d like to go camping, head to Gambells Rest campground in the Bundanoon precinct of the park. The park is easily accessible from Bundanoon, Kangaroo Valley, Nowra and Ulladulla, so it makes for a great day trip or weekend getaway.

Tulip time had its beginnings in 1958, when a group of community citizens met to Organise a festival to publicise the town of Bowral. What made this festival different was the planting of 15,000 tulips in a “tulip walk” in Corbett gardens, the municipal garden in the centre of Bowral. “Tulip time” is an extremely popular time to visit the Southern Highlands; people come from all around to see this spectacular event which stretches over approximately a Month or more depending on weather and other circumstances influencing the growth of the Tulips.

Each year there are a variety of other activities held during Tulip Time – from dancing, musical recitals in the band rotunda and street theatre in Corbett Gardens, street fair, art and craft exhibitions, to horticultural displays, and other activities. There are plenty of things to see and do in the Southern Highlands during Tulip Time.

Marulan Driver Training Centre

If the fresh air, peace and quiet needs to be balanced out with some petrol fumes and some burning rubber – why not head down to the Marulan Driver Training Centre for some blacktop thrills.

Marulan Dirt & Tar Circuits is a unique facility catering to all types of motoring enthusiast. It is located close to Goulburn just off the Hume Highway.  The dominant feature is the central tar motor racing circuit.

Other types of motorsport courses include a hill climb course and, by combining sections of tar and dirt, a motard & rallycross track.

Fitzroy Iron Works offers visitors the chance to see an iconic piece of Australian history as it was the first iron works in Australia.

Burradoo Polocrosse Club

Burradoo Polocrosse Club has been for some years now, located at the historical famous Bong Bong Picnic Racetrack. The 170 acre property “Wyeera”, (an aboriginal word meaning “turning of the soil”) is wholly owned by Bong Bong Picnic Race Club Limited.

The Bong Bong Picnic Race Club is famously known for its one a year Race Day Meeting held at “Wyeera”. The first race was held in 1886, and in previous years it was held on Caulfield Cup day. During its peak, the race day often attracted greater attendance numbers than the Caulfield Cup meeting in Sydney often reaching 35,000 people in six playing fields. The Burradoo complex facilities include 200 permanent yards, four wash bays complexes, unlimited un-powered camp sites, town water supply, showers and toilet blocks, Grandstands and more.

Bong Bong Picnic Races

Bong Bong doesn’t seem to have much to offer; but then again, neither do many of the archaeological sites of Europe. Modern day Berrima has the stone, bricks and mortar, and ambience which helps tourists capture the spirit of the past. But it is the ghosts of Bong Bong past which have more importance in Australian history. At most just a temporary settlement, a way-post, its timber slab and bark huts gone a century ago – Bong Bong saw more important travellers and visitors, resting at the Inn, or entertained at the Throsby estate, on their way south to open up the inland of the continent than any other part of the Highlands. The ghosts of these most famous Australians linger here in the air, among the vanished humble dwellings of Bong Bong. It is perhaps fitting that they are commemorated today by a nature reserve, with swamplands, native birds, and animals. The bush returned – as it were – to what it was before they came.

The site of Bong Bong can be found about 7kms from Bowral on the Moss Vale Road, just before you pass over the bridge on the Wingecarribee River. A “Historic Site” sign points the way: stop and have a look. An obelisk commemorates the village. The Cecil Hoskins Reserve (road just next to it) takes you to the site. Nothing is left above ground level. However, if you look around, you can get some idea of what it must have been like to the casual visitor.

Glow Worm Glen Adventure is a great evening activity for the whole family. With a bit of care you can ensure to see a great light show while minimising impact on these luminescent locals.

A good idea is to start the walk down to the glen at sunset and this way it will be dark by the time you reach the glen. A torch is essential to negotiate the track safely. To help protect the glow worms, turn off torches once you reach the glen, keep quiet and stay on the platform. Maps are available from the Visitors Information Centre in Mittagong or simply ask at Reception of Motel.

Tip: the best time to see the glow worms is from December to February.

Wingecarribee River Walking Track

To build up an appetite or to walk your food off afterwards, take a stroll along Wingecarribee River walking track, which begins and ends at Cecil Hoskins Picnic Area. The track is a short easy walk that is flat with few obstacles and no stairs, so it’s ideal for all age groups. The track takes you west along the river past Bong Bong Weir, and then loops back through regenerating forest on Wingecarribee floodplain. You’ll see various types of eucalypts as you follow this walking track, including the less well- known gums, like snow, swamp, black sallee and manna eucalypt trees.

Keep your binoculars in easy reach for bird watching. Through the forest, you may see woodland birds such as white-throated needle tails, welcome swallows and spotted pardalote. Eastern grey kangaroos also inhabit the forest. And did you know you can find platypus shyly hiding in the lagoon?

The Wombeyan Caves are limestone caves set in the Wombeyan Karst Conservation Reserve, New South Wales Australia within the Southern Highlands about 50 km north of Goulburn.

Access is by the Wombeyan Caves Road from either Mittagong in the east or from the Goulburn-Oberon Road in the west. Wombeyan Caves is a tourist attraction and local holiday area, as well as a reserve for endangered species, such as several species of wallaby, bird, possum, and wombat. The main site includes

several camping grounds, a kiosk, a public phone, a kitchen, and other public facilities. A ranger station is also positioned near the camping site; the rangers serve to collect camping fees from visitors, prevent unsafe human-wildlife association, protect local flora and fauna, and investigate any queries or complaints.

St Francis Xavier Catholic Church

St Francis Xavier Church is built on the site of the convict stockade. Originally known as St Scholastic a’s, the foundation stone was laid by Archbishop Polding in 1849.

This is one of 12 churches in Australia designed by the architect Augustus Pugin, best known for his stunning interiors and furnishings of the British Houses of Parliament, who had a direct impact on the ecclesiastical architecture in Australia.

Interesting fact: On 28 January 2008 Putin’s Church of St Francis Xavier, Berrima, New South Wales, was placed on the New South Wales Heritage Register

Li Sun Mushrooms

Grown in a disused Railway tunnel in Mittagong, the mushroom tunnel was originally built in 1886 to house a single-track railway line. By 1919, it had to be replaced with the still-functioning double-track tunnel to its right, built to cope with the rise in traffic on the route following the founding of Canberra, Australia’s purpose-built capital city.

Since there is currently only one other disused railway tunnel used for mushroom growing in the whole of Australia, these mushrooms have evolved to fit an extremely specialised environmental niche: they are species designed for architecture. The tunnel for which these mushrooms have been so carefully developed is 650 metres long and about 30 metres deep. Buried under solid rock and deprived of the New South Wales sunshine, the temperature holds at a steady 15º Celsius. The fluorescent lights flick on at 5:30 a.m. every day, switching off again exactly 12 hours later.

The current exotic mushroom operations, established by Dr. Arrold in 1987, are unique in Australia. The environmental conditions in the tunnel, namely low temperature and high humidity, are ideal for growing half a dozen varieties of exotic mushrooms. The particular environment in the tunnel is very close to the atmospheric conditions experienced in the mountainous regions of China, Japan and Korea where these types of mushrooms grow naturally.

Interesting fact: The humidity level fluctuates seasonally, and would reach an unacceptable aridity in the winter if Dr. Arrold did not wet the floors and run a fogger during the coldest months.

The Surveyor General Inn – The Surveyor General Inn was built in 1834 for James Harper, using convict labour, and licensed as an inn the following year.

Remaining in the Harper family for almost one hundred years, The Surveyor General is the oldest continuously licensed inn in Australia. The main building, constructed of local convict-hewn sandstone and sand stock bricks, has served as both a pub and accommodation for over a century and a half. The Harper family held the licence for almost 100 years. The Inn came close to closing a few years before its most prosperous period in 1960 when the Licensing Court ordered extensive alterations. The original building had fallen into disrepair by the middle of this century, and efforts were made to preserve it.

The current owners of the Surveyor General (the Durney family), have extensively restored and redeveloped the inn. Their work has been recognised by the Australian Hotel Association’s Award for Excellence for Best Redeveloped Hotel – Country in 1997, and in 2007 they won the Award for Excellence – Best Heritage Hotel.

Berrima Gaol was operational from 1839. The first quarter-sessions were held at the courthouse in 1841, and the first trial by jury in the colony of New South Wales held here. When it first opened, the Gaol consisted of a massive and foreboding thick stone outer wall containing a centre building from which radiated three wings, each with fourteen cells. The centre building had a kitchen and rooms for the keeper and staff. Further work was carried out in the 1840s to make the building more secure. All cell doors were made of solid cedar 3 inches thick and fitted with huge iron bolts.

Corridors and exercise yards were partitioned off by heavy iron grilles. On an underground level were solitary confinement cells and a condemned cell where convicts spent their last days awaiting execution. Only five were ever recorded as being hung at Berrima Gaol. During World War I the army used Berrima Gaol as a German-prisoner internment camp and used the “silent treatment” as an effort to better the prisoners and punish their bad behaviour.

Berrima Gaol re-opened for German Interns in 1915. By 1918 Berrima Gaol became over crowded, holding 300+ Internees. The Correctional Centre was used for some years as an all-female low-to-medium security prison and in September 2011 closed its gate for inmates. The Correctional Centre was reopened for male prisoners in late 2016 and in June 2018 was reclassified as a women-only prison.

The Facility was retired in 2020.

In 2022 Berrima Goal was sold to be developed into a “unique hotel and entertainment precinct”

Berrima Courthouse Ghost Tours are conducted at the Courthouse with the APPI Ghost Hunts & Tours team. The tours start at 8.00pm and conclude at either midnight or 6am. Join APPI for a four hour or an all-night tour, where they will take you through the historic courthouse, tell you some stories, and then they will search to see if they can make contact with any of the spirits who may still remain using their technical equipment plus some spiritual methods. On a hill overlooking the historic village of Berrima, is Harper’s Mansion, a fine Georgian homestead built in 1834 by James Harper (assistant to the Surveyor General Thomas Mitchell). The mansion is set in two acres of strolling gardens of cool climate heritage plants & features one of the largest hedge mazes in Australia. The maze is now over 3 metres tall. The total length of the path is 350 metres but, if you can find the quickest way out, it’s only 185 metres.

Harper’s Mansion, furnished in period style, is listed on the NSW Government Heritage Register as a property of State heritage significance. The Mansion is owned by the National Trust and managed by volunteers on behalf of the Trust.  Harper’s Mansion, Garden and Maze are available to hire for weddings, events, filming and photography

Berrima District Museum, collects, preserves, displays and interprets the heritage of the Berrima District and the Wingecarribee Shire. The museum is located in Market Place, Berrima, at the southern end of the village near the bridge over the Wingecarribee River and is operated by a dedicated band of volunteer members of the society.

The collection contains many interesting objects, facts, original pictures and sculptures relating to the history of the Wingecarribee Shire, with regularly changing exhibitions. The Berrima Museum is recognised as one of the best small country museums with exhibitions aimed to give visitors a tantalising glimpse of early life in the district.

The Berrima Historical Society was founded in 1960 to encourage the study of Australian, local and family history, to establish a museum and a permanent archive for the preservation of the documentary and material heritage of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. Their Collections cover the major towns of Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Robertson and Berrima and the many villages.

The Society has an extensive collection of photographs and pictures relating to the Southern Highlands and beyond, dating from the 1870’s. Membership is open to all with an interest in history, genealogy, museums and heritage conservation.

Berrima Courthouse tours offer visitors a poignant and dramatic reminder of Australia’s colonial history. The museum’s new multi projector wide screen audio visual presentation depicts the discovery of the district by explorers and the reasons for the settlement of this region.

The Berrima region was originally inhabited by the indigenous “Gundungurra” people. European exploration of the area began as early as 1798. The Hume brothers passed through in 1814. John Oxley established a station after droving cattle here in search of new pastures in 1815.

Interesting fact: The Southern Highlands climate and rainfall is some of the most varied in Australia for such a small region. For example: on average Robertson gets 1659 mm rainfall per annum. Only 40 kilometres away in Joadja the average rainfall is 649mm– a difference of 1010mm!
